Creating Team Motivation and Unity – Dedication Games

February 15, 2013 By CoachMyKid Leave a Comment

Team Motivation-Dedication Games

There are tons of books on personal and team motivation.

You can find them by legendary coaches, marketing leaders, and business executives.

But, have you heard of dedication games to motivate your team?

Coach Bob Startkey talks about dedication games in his article Who’s Your 68?

During my tenure at LSU we had something each year we referred to as the “Dedication Game.” We would pick a game each year, usually late in the season, and have our team individually dedicate that game to someone. It was a very emotional event. We would sit in a circle in the locker room and each person in the circle would tell the team who they were dedicating the game to and more importantly why. Each answer was very unique and personal. Tears always flowed. Not only did we have a powerful motivational force for our next opponent but more importantly, we learned something deep about each member of our team. As we are doing this, we would pass a basketball around and you had toautograph the name of the individual that you were dedicating your effort to –also that night, you had to write a letter to that person explaining that you had selected them and why. As you can imagine, this was a special process to go through. Often the person would be deceased — yet the letter would be written. The autographed basketball went with us everywhere. If were on the road a player had to carry it. It went to pre-game meals, was center of the locker room floor for pre-game speeches and even had a seat on the bench with us. We always played with great emotion for those games.

How to Teach Team Defense

How to Teach Team Defense

How to teach team defense?

You have to teach help defense.

This means you have all of the players working together.  If one person gets beat, then someone is there to help. Then everyone rotates toward the basket.

But, that all starts with the players being in the right weak-side position.

In help defense, the player 1 pass removed can hedge or jump to slow dribble penetration. Unless that player calls “help” the defender covering the ball is responsible for recovering to guard the ball. If the player 1 pass removed calls “help” it tells the on ball defender to rotate to the help defender’s offensive player.

February 13, 2013 By CoachMyKid Leave a Comment

Power dribbling is a technique used to help ball handling skills.

In power dribbling you dribble with more force than normal pushing the ball to the ground with extra force.

Offense and Defense Rebounding: What’s the difference?

February 8, 2013 By CoachMyKid Leave a Comment

Offensive and Defensive rebounding are different in their approaches.

The defensive rebounding position is the traditional box out taught at all levels.

As soon as the shot goes up you want to turn and find your man. You are going to put your forearm on him/her about chest level and then you are going to turn and put your butt/hip on them to box out. If you don’t first put your forearm on them they will be able to side step your box out. When you box out you want to keep your hands up.  This will make you wider and harder to get around on the box out. Also it will keep you from wrapping your arms around the offensive player, which is a foul.

But, the offensive rebounding position can be more difficult.

Most of the time as the offensive rebounder you aren’t going to have the best position because the defender is naturally going to be between you and the basket already. That means that you need to use some different moves to get by them when they go to box you out. Here are 3 different moves that you can use to try and get the offensive rebound.

There are 3 moves to help you get around a defender and get an offensive rebound.

  1. Swim Move to get over the arms of the defender.
  2. Spin Move to roll around the defender.
  3. Drive Under to move the defender under the goal.

But, it can be difficult to figure out how to balance the teaching that needs to occur to make them better, with the fun they need to keep playing the game.

This little article has some tips to help you keep that balance.

Mix up your basketball drills on a regular basis to keep the material fresh and fun for your players. If a player has to do the same thing everyday they are going to get bored and turned off to it, but if they are constantly doing new drills it is fun and exciting and they are also getting better. Players learn and develop at a different pace so don’t stress perfection or mastering something, stress effort.
