Here are two tips for baseball coaching that I find very effective with my 5-7 year olds. When coaching baseball to younger players it is critical to keep the baseball drills fun and purposeful at the same time.Duck-Duck-Goose in a LINE!I tried this with the kids in a circle but found that it works better if they are in a line.Line up the kids about 2-3 feet apart along the back stop – standing or on a knee. The “gooser” walks up and down the line … duck, duck, duck… When it is time to goose, he yells “goose” and drops the ball on the ground in front of a player and runs. The goosed player must pick up and glove the baseball then run down the gooser as he runs the bases. The runner (if he is tagged or not) goes to the end of the line and the goosie becomes the gooser. So that everyone participates, I have the new gooser pick one of the players who have not yet participated.Another of my favorite baseball drills I made up was tossing them a pop up and then charging at them like a maniac and stopping right in front of them as the ball arrives (ideally in their glove). My hope is that it forces them to concentrate a little extra on watching the ball and ignoring everything else. At the very least it’s good for a giggle from them 100% of the time.Technorati Tags: tips for baseball, baseball drills, baseball, baseball drills

1 Vote(s)

These two quarterback drills are quick, easy and best of all produce immediate improvements with your football team.I’ve found that using this football drill on quarterbacks who look at the receiver instead of where to throw works wonders.Line up 3 or 4 receivers on one side at a time.Put a cone out about 15yrds where the receiver makes his cut whether for a post or a flag pattern. Next line up more cones on an angle approx 10 to 15 yrds apart. The quarterback throws the football at the cone and NOT the receiver until he makes a perfect timing throw. He does this per cone, per route. Eventually, it doesn’t matter what route he’s throwing to, he’ll land it perfect everytime. This football drill works for the semi-pro and it will certainly work for every level below.Another quarterback football drill that I have found quintessential to helping develop quarterback confidence in the pocket goes like this. Using stand-up bags as the quarterback drops back, toss three or four of them at him to get him used to pressure in the pocket. This football drill will help Qb’s gain confidence and remain calm when the pocket breaks down.Technorati Tags: quarterback drills, football drill, quarterback, football

3 Vote(s)

This is one of the basketball inbound plays we run against man to man defense. We call this basketball play–Snake. It sets up with basketball player #1 inbounding, #4 on the ball side low block, #5 on the opposite side low block, #2 in the near corner and #3 in the far corner. When 1 activates, 4 goes to the far post on the high side of 5 and sets a 2B screen for 3 who sets up his man by driving toward the baseline and then cutting off the high side of the screen, looking for the pass. After 3 clears the screen, 5 reverse spins on his man, getting him on his back and faces the inbounder as option #2 on the play. After 3 clears, 4 pops out into the middle of the key or higher ( FT line ) as person back on D.While all this is happening, 2 stays outside in the corner or shifts up as high as the elbow but stays outside to shoot a jumper/ 3-pointer if his player helps on 3 cutting from far corner. If player guarding 3 gets hip to the situation and begins cheating over toward the middle before the play starts, 3 can simply take two steps toward the 2B screen and back up for an open jumper from the far corner. If the defender starts beating 3 to the high side of the screen, he can simply start by faking low side and then staying low side. This play has helped get many open looks and points over the years.Technorati Tags: basketball inbound plays, basketball play, basketball

3 Vote(s)

One of the football training drills that I came up with this year was for our linemen. It can be used for both offense and defense.Sometimes you here your football linemen say, I wish we could do the carrier’s drills or look at them and think that looks easy. Well, most linemen don’t get a chance to do a ball carrier’s drill. So, I thought of a drill for the linemen using a piece of equipment that we have for our ball carriers. We have a six arm power blaster. Since we were having trouble keeping our linemen low, driving off the ball and chopping their feet. Here is the football drill:Take your offensive and/or defensive linemen and make a straight line in front of the blaster. The first player will get into a 3 point or a 4 point stance (whichever is used).Position the player one yard away from the entrance of the blaster. On the coaches whistle or cadenceThe player will explode forward into and through the blaster. This teaches them to explode off the ball, stay low through the blaster arms, drive forward and chop their feet to fight through.Start off going through the blaster and sprinting to a cone five yards awayAfter each player had a couple reps we then created a four corner cone drill after the five yard sprint. After reaching the initial cone, they would side shuffle to the lower right corner cone, then sprint to the upper right corner cone, then side shuffle to the left upper corner cone and the backward run through the last cone (lower left corner) making a square. You can use any type of run or footwork drill through the cones.Technorati Tags: football training drills, football, football drill

3 Vote(s)

Here are some fun t-ball practice drills that one of my assistant coaches suggested. It’s an idea called “baseball madness”.There is no rhyme or reason to the name just something the boys could remember. Basically we have 3-4 stations and they rotate every 3-5 minutes. The entire baseball drill is about 12-15 minutes. The challenge is to have enough baseball coaches and/or parents to staff the stations.Split the players into pairs and it works as follows:Station 1: Play catchStation 2: Field groundersStation 3: Batting stance and practice swingsStation 4: Running basesThey boys LOVE it and often request “baseball madness” when we have baseball practice!Technorati Tags: T-Ball, fun t-ball practice drills, baseball drill, baseball coach, baseball practice

3 Vote(s)

Check out these baseball throwing drills. They work on fielding and throwing accuracy. The kids love these baseball drills especially when they knock the bats down at home plate.Glove Side RelayWe use a cut off man baseball drill that teaches glove side turning and is competitive. First divide your team up into even lines about 3 or 4 and spread them out about as far as an outfielder to the cut off man. All balls start on the same end and the coach says “go”. The players relay the throw from one player to the next all the way down their line and then back again first line down and back wins. Always remember to get the kids turning to throw on their glove side which is the faster more efficient way to turn to relay a throw.Another favorite baseball drill is called the teepee drill. It works like this.Position a player in each infield position (except catcher) and set bats up over home plate shaped in a teepee. I hit a ground ball to one of the infield positions and have them throw the baseball toward the bats in an attempt to knock them down. The kids love it when they knock the bats down at home plate!Technorati Tags: baseball throwing drills, baseball drills, baseball drill, baseball

1 Vote(s)

As a baseball coach, I am always looking for ways to motivate my team. I wanted to do something encouraging and uplifting for the players. Try these baseball coaching tips with your team. They are simple AND very effective. At baseball practice while we are in stretching circle, (which by the way each boy leads us in a stretch as a way to start practice) I mention each player by name, and he comes forward. I specifically name what it was that they did from the previous week’s game , from striking out a batter, to getting hit by a ball, and getting right back out there.I proceeded to give that player a roll of lifesavers. I noted something specific and well-executed each player on my team did at the baseball game the previous week. This was such a hit that I do it at every practice after our games (a different treat each week). We always work on what needs work, but how great to acknowledge what went right. It was a great morale booster. We won that game, but won’t always, yet there will always be something positive to point out to the players.Technorati Tags: baseball coach, baseball coaching tips, baseball practice, baseball

2 Vote(s)

Being a father of a seven year old, I have found catching the baseball is the most difficult skill for players to become proficient. For some, it is down-right scary. Hitting and throwing are the easiest part of the game. That actually surprised me; I would have predicted hitting to be the hardest for a kid to master. When you think about catching there are so many kinds of plays it may make your head spin. There is the basket-catch, palm-up catch, line drive catch, or the backhand catch. Hikes! At least hitting is straight forward: see the ball, hit the ball. It seems profoundly easy to a youngster compared to the variables of catching. No matter how old they are or how they catch, every player needs to have hand strength. Younger kids, especially, need to have the power to get their glove closed at the point of contact. Older kids might choose to lift weights, squeeze tennis balls, or develop their forearms. All of these activities provide to a player?s strength to closing their hand. Younger kids have a more difficult task. Weights are too heavy; they need a realistic approach to improving hand and finger strength. Having kids catch the ball with their bare ?glove? hand is a good way to help develop the hand power needed to catch the ball. Recently, I have started to experiment with this method. My son, who is very small for his age, uses a Decker Sports Training Glove. The glove is significantly smaller than a regular glove so he must squeeze his hand to make a catch. If not, the ball bounces out of the glove onto the ground. He has learned to use two hands on the catch, but some balls simply take him out of position to use both hands. We use a cushioned ball when we play bare-handed catch. Since we started, he seems to have more control of his glove when we switch back. Obviously, bare-handed catch not only works strength but hand/eye coordination as well. Try it out for a few weeks and let me know if it makes a difference.

2 Vote(s)

My girls absolutely love this softball drill. These are indoor softball drills that many of us need this time of year when the first two to three weeks are often spent inside. We call this one the Mat Drill.Pair two girls up, one on each end of the gym. Most gyms have a mat on the wall on each end of the gym. One team starts with the ball (an inside ball and the team to start is decided by the softball coach). That team takes the ball, and has the full court on their end from the baseline to the volleyball line on the court (usually near the top of the key). They throw the ball to the other two girls at the other end in anyway they can, hard, soft, bounce, however they wish. The object is to try to get it past them and have the ball hit the mat. If the ball hits the mat (gets past the two girls, they are out, and the next two are up). If the ball bounces off the wall, and goes past the line by the top of key, the other team gets it. The team is out if the ball hits the mat in any way, shape, or form.I usually divide the teams up half and half. Reward for the group of teams that outlast the others can be anything a coach wants to come up with for incentive. This softball drill helps them work on throwing accuracy and fielding both at the same time.Technorati Tags: softball drill, indoor softball drills, softball coach, softball

3 Vote(s)

My team loves our “water balloon drill”. I coach 6-8 year olds, but this is a fun softball drill for older kids as well when it’s really hot outside. It is important for any softball coach to have these fun softball drills for their teams. This softball drill is basically a water balloon toss. The kids don’t realize they are working on catching with two hands, moving to the “ball”, anticipating “ball” trajectory, and appropriate speed, hardness, and accuracy in throwing.Line the kids up in two lines facing each other, each with a partner across from them. Start 3 feet apart. Each pair has a water balloon, and on the whistle, the balloons get passed from one line to the other. Then one line takes a step back, and the whistle blows for the balloon to get tossed back. Players whose balloons break are eliminated. Repeat until you get a winner.NOTE: Before each whistle blow, rotate the balloons down a pair, with the balloon from the last pair of kids moving up to the first pair. This eliminates any unfairness due to fill amount or shape.Technorati Tags: softball drill, softball coach, fun softball drills, softball

3 Vote(s)

I’ve struggled getting my girls to be physical under the hoop; especially the younger players. Try these girls basketball drills to improve their skills.I have a line of girls from the foul line and out. The first two girls in line are involved. Both are facing the basket. The girl in front of the line has the basketball and tosses it up against the backboard and goes get the rebound under the hoop. The second girl follows and is physical with the girl who rebounded. The rebounder pump fakes and then leans into the defender on her back and goes up hard, making the basket and drawing contact.Another basketball drill is having one offensive player on the block being closely guarded by a defender. The basketball coach is out on the wing and feeds the girl under the hoop. The offensive girl works on recognizing where the defender is playing so as to understand her options.I give the girls three main options: Drop Step, Up and Under, or kick back out. Have the defender rotate cheating low and then high. You can then move this drill to the elbow as well.Technorati Tags: girls basketball drills, basketball, basketball drill, basketball coach

3 Vote(s)

One of my most effective softball practice ideas is to have my players act as the coaches. Through out the softball season I have intersquad scrimmages and/or situational plays with pitchers, fielders, runners, batters. I have players rotating as the first base, third base and bench coach. This allows the players to make the calls that we would make in the course of a game. It helps the players see the game from a different view. It really opens their eyes to the little things that we pick up in the course of the game. They then are able to use things during actual games. There is one softball drill that I don’t do offend enough, but the girls love it. Base stealing and learning how to slide. Every drill focuses on catching, throwing, etc. Sometimes these get boring and the girls want more. Here is a trick I use to get my softball players to slide properly:Get into a three (3) point stance like you would in football. Kick your right/left leg out in front landing on your rear-end.Hands in the air like you?re signaling for a touch-down. I explain and show the kids so they get the proper form. This teaches the proper approach and slide form.Technorati Tags: softball practice ideas, softball, softball drill

2 Vote(s)

If you’re coaching 7-8 year olds, you are always looking for fresh kids basketball drills and plays. My 7-8 year olds love to run! So, while I try to teach them to dribble without looking at the basketball, at the same time that they want to run. We do the following simple drill:I stand at one end of the court and hold up fingers while they dribble towards me as fast as they can, but still under control. They have to look up at my hand to see how many fingers I have up and then yell out the number. I keep changing until they all reach my end of the court. Then they turn around and go back towards my assistant basketball coach.Simple but effective — hope this helps others teach the kids to dribble without looking at the ball.Another great basketball drill for our young kids is a “no dribbling drill.” We play 5 on 5 for about 10 minutes with absolutely no dribbling. It’s amazing to see how they spread out, look for the open man, protect the ball, and make cleaner shots when they’re not concerned with driving. Even our big kids down low have broken bad habits of putting the ball on the floor after an offensive rebound. What’s great about this basketball drill too, is that it shows immediately in the games. And when they do dribble, there is more patience and control.Technorati Tags: kids basketball drills and plays, basketball, basketball coach, basketball drill

1 Vote(s)

When coaching youth baseball (ages 8-11), we practice 3X a week before games start up for the season. The last baseball practice day of the week I have them scrimmage themselves.I put my starters out, rotating the pitchers every inning. It’s a great evaluation tool for me, especially weeks before games start so it tells volumes as to what needs to be worked on as a team and individually. The players love it because it gives them a competitive edge, more so they can see how they stack up against other members of the team. That point in itself has helped a few of my players as I’ve noticed more hustle on the field & more focus on their work ethic when doing miscellaneous baseball drills throughout other practices. We have also been working on quick feet with good throws: 2 lines, facing each other, throw a ground ball; other line charges, proper body position, quick change in feet and a good throw back to the other line. After every touch of the ball, the player moves to the end of the other line. This baseball drill moves fast and can keep them focused on the baseball (grounders) and also on quick feet with placement of the feet (left foot forward throw for right handers for example) and gets them throwing on the run. This is not a new drill, but has worked wonders in our team.Technorati Tags: coaching youth baseball, baseball practice, baseball drills, baseball drill, baseball

1 Vote(s)

One of the baseball catcher drills I do with my catchers is this rapid fire conditioning baseball drill. I would limit this to the older catchers!I start at the 1st base area with a fungo and hit all sorts of balls at them–balls where they need to drop, balls that are high so they have to jump, and balls wide where they may have to jump out and get!I hit the baseball soft to start out. They will after a while ask me to hit it harder because they are competing against each other on who makes the best play.I’ve found this baseball drill makes them very aggressive going after wild pitches and they compete with each other on who may have gotten to the hardest ball or who blocked the most! Plus it makes them tougher and it is rapid fire so they get some conditioning as well.Technorati Tags: baseball catcher drills, baseball drill, baseball

2 Vote(s)

One of the baseball baserunning drills that I use during baseball practice helps to make EVERY runner better at cutting the corners while rounding a base.I have them run the first turn around 3rd and note how far out the rounded 3rd coming into the base, then how far they traveled outside the foul line on the way home. Then, I give them this tip:When you head into the turn, think less about making a “loop” and more about leaning in with the left shoulder toward the ground as you approach 3rd base (a little like a water skiing turn to make a rooster tail), the gravity of running full speed at that angle combined with hitting the bag on the inside corner with your right foot propel you nearly right down the line toward home.EVERY player improved his time going from 2nd to home in the FIRST try!!This one helps to reinforce this baseball drill:Load the bases with runners and hit the baseball to each fielder. Each time I hit the ball I yell out how many outs there are. Than I see what the runners and fielders do on their own as if we were in real game situations . We discuss after the play if they made the right decision. This drill makes them think on their own and react much quicker during a game.Technorati Tags: baseball baserunning drills, baseball practice, baseball drill, baseball

2 Vote(s)

Here are two great basketball practice drills for defense. These drills are excellent to help teach the players to keep the ball moving and for setting screens. The first basketball drill is called 4 on 1: You have 4 offensive players, but only one of them can shoot. You also have one defensive player. All players are allowed to cut and receive the ball, set screens for the shooter. The offense has to keep moving at all times cutting and screening. The defensive is trying to get around the screens, deny the passes and refuse the shot, getting the rebounds. The second drill is the Defense Man to Man Positioning drill. We put three offensive players out around the perimeter.Under the basket on the base line we have three lines. These are defensive players. The basketball coach passes the ball to one of three offensive players. The three defensive players attack in a defensive stance each picking up a man. The basketball goes live and continues until the shot is made or the ball is turned over. The defense then becomes offense and the offense gets back into the line under the basket on the base line.Technorati Tags: basketball practice drills, basketball drill, basketball coach, basketball

1 Vote(s)
