Coach Rod Huff was published a great resource for youth baseball coaches through Coaches Choice, Inc. His book titled Coaching Made Easier gives coaches a clear and specific vision going into their upcoming season. I would highly recommend it for coaches out there looking to maintain their edge this season over the competition. In September, it was the #1 seller in its division on Amazon.com. Here is a brief description of the book: Coaching Made Easier: How to Successfully Manage Your Youth Baseball Team ? A Step-by-Step Guide to a Rewarding Season, is the author?s labor of love for the sport of baseball in general and specifically the brave, volunteer coaches who stepped up to coach a team. Scheduled for release in August 2008, the book helps a coach maneuver through the season from the draft to the end of the year party.Huff coached his son?s teams for eleven years. He started as an assistant for two years but was quickly asked to take a team as a head coach. Immediately after volunteering he went to the book store to find books that would assist him with this responsibility. What he found was a plethora of books on baseball instruction ? books that taught general baseball skills such as hitting, pitching, etc. He was unable to find any books on what it actually takes to manage a team, the players, and the parents. Through trial and error over the years, he developed an effective way to manage the process of coaching youth baseball teams and wished to share it with other volunteers who find themselves in this situation. His ?system? was effective from a win/lose point of view but he also found the parents and players asking to be on his teams year after year. A testimony to his concern for his ?team? - parents and players alike. Author Rod Huff has two children and resides with his wife, Lisa, in Brentwood, Tennessee. His desire is to equip volunteer coaches with tips, tricks and ideas that will make everyone?s experience better. Coaching Made Easier can be ordered through Coaches Choice at www.coacheschoice.com or the number listed below.

12 Vote(s)

So here is my latest addition to my softball coaching drills. This softball drill works on accuracy of the throw, making sure to turn and rotate the body form correctly when the player is in the middle and throwing left to right, and speed.Skills achieved:Throwing, Running, Positioning of the throw and Team Comradery.Divide the team up into 3’s. If there are twelve players then we have four teams. If I’m short one player or so I will join in or have parents or my assistant softball coach join in. I think is is vital for parents to be involved as much as possible. I will usually have the players about 15 to 20 feet apart, and increase the distance as the drill progresses. We then begin the drill by teaching throwing skills from player one to 12,,,, and up1 2 34 5 67 8 910 11 12Player one will throw to player two then to three. If the softball is ever dropped they must throw the ball back to player one and start over. If the ball has not been dropped we continue this pattern until the ball has thrown to all three players FIVE times and ends back to player (1), (4), (7), etc.Who ever wins stays put, and I have the other teams give me a full lap around the bases at full speed. I then have the players rotate as follows and keep doing this until every player has been in each position or they are ready for WATER : e.g.3 1 26 4 59 7 812 10 11To spice it up a bit and keep a healthy competitive team spirit I rotate players on different teams to make it even more competitive. If I have a few players weaker than the others I will rotate them on another 3 player team.Another thing that I’ve then implemented is using this drill with one of the four teams as runners and practicing the pickle drill. Everyone has a chance to throw, run and learn each individual skill. I then have the “runners” keep track of how many steals they get from a team and they are given a prize at the end of practice. The runner must begin on my command and the throw needs to made from player 1 to 2, then 2 to 3, and so on within each team. The runner advances to each position until she is either out or returns back to player (1), (4), (7), & 10 in the first rotation and so on throughout the rotations.Note: I have noticed more team spirit with one another, assisting one another on their skills or throwing, and of course players picking each other so they can be competitive. Although this will always happen in team sports as a coach take advantage of this time to teach all the players that they are equal and to work with one another. Having the advantage as a coach to move the players anywhere we want makes it even that much more productive.Technorati Tags: softball coaching drills, softball drill, softball coach, softball

15 Vote(s)

These are a couple of my favorite softball drills that I have used year to year while coaching softball. To practice running bases and to make sure everyone is giving their all and working on hitting the bag with the most efficiency – the players split up evenly at each of the 4 bags (this is their team). Then we have a tag team race to see which team finishes first. It is a great team activity that gets everyone screaming and yelling and working on giving their best for the team. (The losers have to do 15 push ups.) Fun way to get in shape and to work on base running.Another softball drill we do is to have the players partner up and stand a few feet from each other and underhand toss a tennis ball to each other without a glove. This teaches then to use both hands.I tell my players that the tennis ball is an egg and if they drop it, it will break. We then have them put their gloves on and replace the tennis balls with softballs. It really teaches them to use the non-glove hand to secure the ball and also the underhand tossing teaches the correct method for short distance throws from SS to 2B and vice versa.Technorati Tags: softball drills, coaching softball, softball drill, softball

7 Vote(s)

I call these softball throwing drills the 20 Minute Special. It is a fast paced softball drill to let players get a lot of reps in a short time.Start with 2 players at every position. You need 2 coaches hitting balls and 1 catcher for each softball coach. The coach is positioned on each side of home plate.Equipment needed: bucket of balls, 2 coaches, 2 players at every position, The players catch on quick and need a break after 10-15 mins of nonstop ground balls.1. Coach on left hits the softball to SS. SS then throws to 2nd base and 2nd base throws back to catcher. The other coach (Right) at the same time hits to 3rd base and she throws to 1st. 1st base throws back catcher. The players rotate as soon as the ball is thrown. The coach hits the ball immediately after catch to player 2. If the player misses the ball they let it go and continues. You can make a contest to see who has the least amount of balls overthrown. (3-5mins)2. Coach(L) hits to 2nd base, she throws to SS then SS throws home. Coach(r) hits ball to 1st base, she throws to 3rd base, then back home.(3-5min)3. Coach (L) hits to ss, she throws to 1st base. Coach (R) hits to 2nd base, she throws to 3rd base then back to catcher.(3-5min)4. coach (L) hits to SS, she throws to 3rd base. Coach(R) hits to 2nd base she throws to 1st base then back to home. (3-5min)Total time for this drill is 12-20 min.Technorati Tags: softball throwing drills, softball drill, softball coach, softball

10 Vote(s)

This is one of my teams favorite basketball drills. It is called Cutthroat and I am sure to include it as often as possible in my basketball practice plans.Play three-on-three or four-on-four (I prefer 4 on 4) which is hugely effective in teaching players how to move. The rules are simple. The game is best played with three or more teams of four (any leftover players can be rotated in at your discretion). To minimize confusion, each team should have its own practice jersey.Every player on a team must touch the basketball at least once before any shot can go up. If a player catches the ball and fails to face the basket in triple threat position before dribbling or passing, it is a turnover. If a player passes the ball, then fails to cut to the basket and fill to an open spot or go screen for a teammate, it’s also a turnover.A player can dribble no more than three times — either to open up a passing lane or to attack the basket.Only the guy with the whistle in his mouth (the basketball coach!) is allowed to officiate.Points are automatically and instantly deducted any time a player protests a call. One point is awarded for each basket made, one point for each offensive rebound, and one point for each steal (unforced turnovers don’t count!).At every change of possession (turnover and defensive rebound) and at every made basket, the ball is passed back to the coach. If there’s been a change of possession, the offensive team *sprints* off the floor and the defensive team goes to offense. The third team, waiting on the baseline, *sprints* onto the court and matches up on defense. The coach encourages this quick change over by passing the ball to the offensive team almost as soon as he receives it.After a made basket, however, it is the defensive team that vacates the floor. The offense stays on as long as they continue to score, which they can only do by passing and cutting and staying in motion.Technorati Tags: basketball drills, basketball practice plans, basketball coach

13 Vote(s)

This past week we worked on offense with a half court 5 on 3 basketball drill with the youth team–7 year olds. This is one of the youth basketball drills that we used quite successfully. Give it a try with your team! The offense needed to find the open man and couldn’t take a shot unless they were in the paint.Every time they scored or the defense stole the ball everybody came out to half court and we started over. There were a number of “freeze” times when I stopped play and asked the players where they should be playing. I had some strategy talks at some of the start overs. “Look like a basketball team” was my message to them. This all played into the game when we had run up the score 33 to 6 by half. To slow down play we told the kids they needed to have 4 passes before they could shoot and had to be in the paint to take a shot. It was as if a light went on for them as they started to look up as they came down court and look for the open man.Technorati Tags: basketball drill, youth basketball drills, basketball

12 Vote(s)

While coaching youth basketball one of things I literally preach to my younger boys team is that you must learn how to make your free throws consistently. All of the close basketball games will be determined by how your team did on the free throw line.I call this basketball drill — “Own the Free throw Line”. This drill will help them feel more confident each time they go to the line. Each shooter has a chance to make 2-free throws. As one shoots, the rest of the team is on the baseline rooting him on to make em! Now if he misses both the whole team runs to the other end of the base line touches it and runs back.Easy for the first time but as players continue to miss they realize this is a lot of work and it would be easier to just make the free throw! If he makes at least 1 out of 2 they don’t run. If he makes both then he gets to bank his no running after 2 misses privilege. He also gets to say when it gets used or he may chose to not use it at all!For this young age they have fun with this and do get better with their free throw shooting.Technorati Tags: coaching youth basketball, basketball, basketball drill, free throw

14 Vote(s)

This is one of the football drills defensive end that we really liked this season. We call it the Defensive Gap Shoot drill. The objective is to get the defensive linemen and blitzing linebackers to watch the football, fire off the ball low and hard, scrape down the line of scrimmage and make a tackle. Here is how it works:Two players line up like offensive linemen, 6 inch splits, then lean together so shoulders are almost touching forming a small gap between them. Coach lines up like a center on one side or the other and calls signals trying to draw the defensive lineman offsides. When the football coach snaps the ball, the defensive lineman “shoots the gap” low and hard. Once he shoots the gap he scrapes down the line of scrimmage toward a tackling dummy as fast as he can go and makes the tackle. Have each player shoot the gap two times in each direction. This was another great opportunity to correct poor technique. We also teach the players who get hung up by the blockers to spin, swim, drag and/or bull rush to get through as fast as possible and scrape down that line.As they get better at this football drill, you can crank up the difficulty by letting the blockers use their hands, and provide ever increasing resistance. You can also start timing them to see if they improve and or make a competition out of it.This drill really paid dividends in the games.Technorati Tags: football drills defensive end, defensive linemen, football, football coach, football drill

14 Vote(s)

If you’re looking for fun football drills for your team, here’s a fun football drill–one that kids love, even 17 years old!Create a square with 4 cones 10 yards apart.Split your team in 4 equal groups.Place one group on each side of the square and name them: A-B-C-D.A is facing B while C is facing D. Defense and Offense may be mixed together, (helps with team spirit)Throw the football to one player of group A.The whole group now starts to run and must then run the ball forward while the B group tries to stop them (Tackle the ball carrier). If they cross the line, it’s a TD! Get the ball and throw it to one of the players of either of the other 2 groups, and so on.It is a great, fun drill that helps the kids to learn to follow their lead block. It helps with the improvisation of team work (Like when recovering a fumble) and it gets the ball to players who do not usually touch it, which is always nice.We run this maybe once a week as a reward.Technorati Tags: fun football drills, football drill, football

8 Vote(s)

Here is one of our football practice plans to work on this skill. The idea for this football drill is to speed up their recognition of the ball coming for them and to speed up their reaction time in getting their hands up and in place. So this what I have them do: stand with their backs to me about 10 yards away and I throw the ball at them and yell “turn”.Tackling drills at this level are so crucial so we set up cones to emulate the line and the side line. we have the back start lined head up with a middle linebacker with a TE at the end of the line and DE across from him.The end gets to practice hook blocking or sustained blocking while the DE has to get rid of the TE to make the tackle or string out the play and force the back to cut in and let the MLB make the tackle. The Back works on reading the block and making his cuts while the middle line backer learns how to pursue without over or under pursuing and making the tackle. The players love it and it really improves our ability to tackle on the outside.Technorati Tags: football, football practice plans, football drill

6 Vote(s)

Early in the season we are all looking for new ideas for indoor baseball practice drills. Here are two we use often when the weather just won’t let us on the field.Back to Back Fly Ball DrillA player and a partner stand back to back. One player underhands the baseball into the air and shouts “look” or “now”.The opposite player then turns ans searches for the ball in an attempt to catch the fly. This baseball drill is made easier or more difficult by the height of the ball and by how long the tosser waits to shout the turn phrase. Rotating partners can add to team building.Another thing that our kids really like to do are ?play? with non-baseball equipment. During our indoor sessions, we take practice ?swings? with a medicine ball. The batter holds the ball with two hands and makes a good swing throwing the medicine ball to his partner. The kids added a penalty for dropping the heavy ball or for a bad toss, ten push-ups.The key is to make sure they are swinging their arms and ball in a good swing plane and using their hips and legs to put the extra push into the swing. The kids really enjoy it. Another variation is to see how far you can throw the medicine ball. Again, the focus is on the power from the legs.Technorati Tags: indoor baseball practice drills, baseball, baseball drill

17 Vote(s)

I have some very basic youth baseball drills that I do with my young players. Nothing revolutionary from a performance standpoint, but these baseball drills get he kids involved. One of my favorites is a rotation drill. Play 2B, SS and 3B and put 3 or 4 kids in right field. If you have a full baseball team you can field both corner outfield spots.Hit the ball to RF and have the kids work the relay cut off to 2B to 3B. The player who fields the ball in the outfield follows in to play 2B and works his way through SS, 3B, and back to RF with each subsequent hit. This baseball drill reinforces the play, keeps them involved, and lets them see it from start to finish. If you are playing both outfield spots you can switch the balls hit from RF to LF and still have the kids rotate into 2B.Technorati Tags: youth baseball drills, baseball drills, baseball, baseball drill

7 Vote(s)

As an experienced coach, I have always thought teaching the curveball has been the hardest pitch for players to master. Whether it be the arm slot, spin, or grip; the curve has been a challenge to teach. Players who come into high school having never thrown the pitch; seldom managed to perfect the vertical break a good curve possesses. It wasn?t until I started giving structured lessons at a local baseball academy, that I got a clear picture on the skills needed to throw the breaking ball. After seeing a lot of players struggle with the pitch, I started having the players use the following sequence to master the curveball. Segmenting the movement, without slowing each action down, helps the body master the physical programming at actual game speed. The process allows players to do the five things needed to throw a nasty breaking pitch. Three of the drills should be performed on flat ground; the final exercise should be done on the pitching mound. Here is the list:- Create Maximum Top Spin- Use Fastball Arm Action - Incorporate Appropriate Leverage - Release Producing Vertical Break - Linear Finish in Proper Fielding Position 1. Two Knee Laydown Spinners: Players start on two knees with a 45 degree relationship between their shoulders and the target. With their throwing elbow raised to slightly below parallel with shoulder, players lay their forearm down on their bicep. With the forearm resting against the upper arm, the player should point their glove toward the target. When ready, players extend the throwing elbow working on spinning the ball in a vertical fashion. Extension should occur at the highest possible point to help the pitching break in a 12-6 fashion. 2. Two Knee Arm Swing Spinners: Players start on two knees with a 45 degree relationship between their shoulders and the target. With their hands together, players wait to start the drill. When ready, players violently break their hands, starting a forceful downward swing of the arm. As the arm circles past the pass the pitching ear, players incorporate the increased elbow flexion practiced in Drill #1. Passing through that position, players again try to release the pitch at the highest point. Releasing high encourages a larger break in the pitching due to increased gravity Pulldown. 3. Getting to the Kickstand: Players start with their lower body in a torque position. That is, with the pitchers glove toe facing the target while their shoulders stay back facing either first or third base (depending on which hand the player throw with). Also, like in Drill #2, players start with their hands together. The drill, much like Drill #1 and #2, isolate the pitcher?s upper body. The legs are not used in this drill as well. On the hand break, pitchers explode the ball down trying to gain maximum momentum into the circle. Pitchers release out front, at the highest point, pulling the rear heel off the ground. With the rear heel off the ground, the pitcher?s toe remains connected. This helps the pitcher maintain balance and stay in a straight line with the target. Getting a vertical break does require the pitcher to keep a linear relationship with the target. Many times, too many rotational movement increases the horizontal movement on the pitch. After release, a pitcher?s rear shoelaces, belly-button, chest, and nose should be pointed at the target. Staying in a straight line with the target, pitchers encourage their arm to travel in a linear path producing proper up/down break on the ball. 4. Step-Behind Spinners: Players start with their feet and glove shoulder facing the target. With hands together, players take a step forward with their rear leg. The step should be behind the glove leg not in front (like a traditional crow hop). Stepping behind allows the player a chance to swing the glove leg open using their hips to throw the baseball. During the linear step, the pitcher should tilt their glove shoulder up creating a teeter-totter effect. During the forceful lower body step, players should break their hands and circle the arm at an increased tempo. With the lower body action, players should be able to throw harder than normal. This should help produce ?fastball? type arm action. Keeping the same arm action allows the pitcher a chance to get the greatest amount of spin on the baseball. 5. Double Bounce Karate Chops: On the mound, pitchers assume a balanced position with their glove leg lifted parallel at the waist. With their hands together, the pitcher takes two small hops with their rear leg. Both of the hops should be straight up and down, so ground is not being gained forward. Instead, these hops should be used to build energy from the ground up. After the second hop, players are ?putting together? each movement practiced. That is why Drill #5 is performed last. Players should tilt the shoulders, circle the arm, provide flexion to the elbow, and release at the highest possible point. Also, the drill should provide pitchers with enough momentum to get enhanced action on their pitches.

10 Vote(s)

If you’re searching for some new ideas for practice drills for softball, try the ones below. Both are excellent for conditioning, hand-eye coordination and overall skill development.Last Girl StandingThe first softball drill is one that we do at least 2 times a week. We use “soft-hands” or paddles instead of gloves. I put them in groups of 3 or 4 and they take turns rolling 5 ground balls to the next person in line. Then the person who fielded the balls becomes the roller and the roller hustles to the end of the line.I make it a relay race so that the group of 4 that gets each person 5 ground balls the quickest wins and everyone else has to run a sprint. We do that a few times then progress to the “knock out drill” where I hit balls at them (while still wearing the “soft hands”) and if they don’t field it cleanly, they’re out.Last girl standing wins and the rest run a sprint. It really has improved their focus and hand-eye coordination on ground balls. Plus, they like the competitiveness of it.Conditioning DrillAnother softball drill that I do for my players is for building speed and agility. It is called the 60 second drill where they walk at a pace for 30 seconds, jog for 20 seconds and sprint for 10 seconds. Then they build up minutes.Softball is stop and start which this works towards.Technorati Tags: practice drills for softball, softball drill, softball

14 Vote(s)

Here are two basketball coaching drills that I use repeatedly throughout the season. The first basketball drill has become one of my favorites and I use it in many variations to address the skills we need to work on. The basketball shooting drill is simple yet effective.Line up 3 players at half court, and 3 more on free throw line behind them. The dribbler starts on the base line and has to dribble past the first line and then get past the second. Many variations can be used. Working on traps, talking, put the posts in the second line and have them work on communicating for rotation of a full court press. If a dribbler has a problem of putting their head down, have someone down behind the second line of defenders sporadically wave their hands so the dribbler has to see them and make the long pass. So many options from this for both offense and defense.Another coaching drill, 25 Shots, was originally for youth basketball teams but it works well for all ages. I stress the importance of their shooting. Before my players can leave practice they have to shoot 25 shots just around the foul line or in and make them to count. This has helped the players get motivated enough to really concentrate on their shooting and not just throwing the ball up.Technorati Tags: basketball coaching drills, basketball drill, basketball shooting drill, basketball

18 Vote(s)

I have many good defensive football drills for kids who are just learning how to tackle to get them to explode through the tackle without thinking about it. This one is called the Shuffle-Carioca-Explode drill. The problem I have had in the past is some kids – especially the ones that are just learning or are a little timid – sometimes tend to spend too much time thinking about hitting and the right way to tackle, etc. This football tackling drill doesn’t give them the time to think about hitting the dummy, plus the explosion through the hitting zone gets taught as well.Set up 3 cones about 5 yds apart each. At the end of the 3 cones, about another 5 yds place a tackling dummy. Idea is to have the kids shuffle between the first 2 cones, then carioca between cones 2-3, then turn and sprint after the 3rd cone all the way through the tackling dummy. The concept behind the football drill is to get the kids to learn how to explode and run through the tackle as they learn how to tackle. (The key to this is the kids don’t spend time thinking about how they are going to tackle, they just turn and do it because they are worrying about shuffling, then carioca.)Technorati Tags: defensive football drills, football tackling drill, football drill

15 Vote(s)

Here are a couple of baseball batting practice ideas that I use year after year with my teams. These baseball drills are simple and effective. Try them with your younger players for quick batting skill improvements.Bunting DrillsIf you’re having a hard time getting a kid to square up and make contact during a bunt take the bat away from him and replace it with his glove. Then put him in the batting cage or in the batter’s box and throw pitches at him forcing him to square like he has a bat, hold his hands like he has a bat but catch the ball with his glove hand. This helps to eliminate the fear the kids have of squaring up against a pitch and helps to reinforce the visual perception he needs to catch the baseball with the bat.Another simple, yet effective way to get kids to step towards the pitcher when batting goes like this. Place a 2 x 4 board about 5 feet in length behind the batter’s feet. As the boy swings into the pitch, he is to move his feet in parallel with the board so as not to step on the board. If he steps on the board, then he’s not moving into the pitch and towards the pitcher’s mound effectively. Doesn’t take long for them to step to the pitch and stay off the board.Technorati Tags: baseball batting practice, baseball drills, baseball

8 Vote(s)

Volleyball is a very quick game, which means that you need to react quickly, and put your legs and arms into motion as fast as possible.

6 Vote(s)

Volleyball shoes are made by a large number of manufacturers, but the most common brands are Asics and Mizuno. Nike, Adidas and a few other brands are also competitive, but if you look at the Olympic volleyball players then you will definitely see a trend in the shoes that they are wearing! Volleyball Shoes are all made differently, but they aim for the same thing. The more grip on court the better, the more support the better and of course the least amount of weight is also highly sought after.

15 Vote(s)

If you’re coaching a middle school team, here are ideas for basketball drills for defense. A favorite is this man-to-man basketball drill. This can turn your team around! The defender is on the inside of the 3 point line and the offensive payer on the outside of the 3 point line. In order for a young, inexperienced player to understand how to defend the person they are covering I do the following:I start out as the offensive player and have one of my players as the defender. Start on the left side or the right, doesn’t matter. Let’s say I’m on the right side. The defender allows 2 to 3 feet between their man. No basketball needed in the beginning. I will run as fast as I can down the side line towards the basket.Because I make the first move towards the sideline I’m usually one to two steps ahead of the defender. In order for the defender to make up the one to two steps I have the young player cut down more of an angle, moving a bit toward the basket and moving slightly away from the offensive player. This adjustment allows the defender to get back in control and to help prevent the offensive player from going around them and having an open lay-up.Once they have made up the adjustment they can move up towards the defender 2 to 3 feet once again. I then run back up following the 3 point line moving towards the other side with the defender covering me allowing 4 to 5 feet between each other.Keep in mind that the offensive player is running. Just as the offensive player reaches the other side of the lane I have the defensive player begin to again cut down more of an angle again moving towards the basket and slightly away from the defender. Once again when the adjustment has been compensated the defender will move closer to the offensive player. This drill has taken my players from playing average or below average on defense to become one of the best defensive players in the league.Technorati Tags: basketball drills for defense, basketball drill, basketball

10 Vote(s)

I’d like to share one of our favorite basketball layup drills. It is a quick offensive basketball drill that I use for my 13/14 year old boys basketball team.Lay ups with a twist(An alternative to the same old boring layup lines)In an effort to maximize vertical leap on layups, we set up 2 folding chairs facing each other about 3 feet apart right near the low block. We then place a broom stick across the 2 seats. The last step of the basketball drill for this layup has to be a jump over the stick on the way up for the shot.We do this for right handed layups and then for left handed layups. For an added challenge, we then place the chairs back to back about 3 feet apart. Next we place the broomstick on top of the backs of the chairs for extra height. We also do this one for both right and left handed layups. You will be surprised how many kids are able to do this even though at first they don’t think they can. It is also a lot of fun for the players and it helps their jumping.Technorati Tags: basketball layup drills, basketball drill, basketball

5 Vote(s)
