Here is one of the tips for coaching softball that was sent to me recently. I’m including it here for you so you can try this out with your team!
This is something I’ve found very helpful. It isn’t a softball drill, but its very effective at creating boundaries for behavior, letting kids know what is expected of them and best of all, makes discipline problems very easy.
I bring a big pad of paper and a marker to the first softball practice of the season (I coach very young girls).
I take them out in the field away from the parents and sit them in a circle. I tell them that the goal of the season is make everyone a better softball player and then pose the question “how are we going to do that?” I write down their answers and fill in where I need to.
Then I ask “what should the rules be for being part of this team?” - Again I write down their answers and fill in where I need to.
Finally I ask “what should happen when someone breaks one of these rules?” - And I write down the answers.
