I find that in passing situations the quarterback has to get rid of the football in a hurry; this means receivers have to be ready. Here is one of our football practice plans to work on this skill. The idea for this football drill is to speed up their recognition of the ball coming for them and to speed up their reaction time in getting their hands up and in place. So this what I have them do: stand with their backs to me about 10 yards away and I throw the ball at them and yell “turn”. Tackling drills at this level are so crucial so we set up cones to emulate the line and the side line. we have the back start lined head up with a middle linebacker with a TE at the end of the line and DE across from him. The end gets to practice hook blocking or sustained blocking while the DE has to get rid of the TE to make the tackle or string out the play and force the back to cut in and let the MLB make the tackle. The Back works on reading the block and making his cuts while the middle line backer learns how to pursue without over or under pursuing and making the tackle. The players love it and it really improves our ability to tackle on the outside. Technorati Tags: football, football practice plans, football drill
