One of the football lineman drills I do is called the “Machine Gun”. It’s a shedding drill for linebackers & defensive backs, a blocking football drill for running backs and wide receivers. I bring out a defensive player between 2 cones 3 yards apart. The other players form two separate lines facing him 3 yards apart. Line # 1 & # 2. A football coach is behind the defensive player & calls out either # 1 or 2, they start to come out & block the defensive player. His goal is to take on the blocker, not knowing where he is coming from, rotate his hips, get in a hitting position & shed the blockers. I then have one person at the end with a football. When I feel he has done a good job shedding I call “ball” & the running back runs thru the cones & the defensive player attempts to tackle him.
